Series: Obligations of Being Human

The title of the series and exhibition is a quote by the historian and art critic, Simon Schama, who spoke of the need for art to provoke action when human life is assaulted. I was trained as a clinical psychologist who taught Ph.D. candidates how to interpret the Rorschach inkblot test, and in this series I apply my knowledge of how perceptual attributes of non-representational objects trigger interpersonal thoughts and feelings in determining color choices and the interplay of forms within the paintings.

Poured acrylic paint creates the foundation of each piece, augmented with additional layers of pours, structured and organic gestures, and tape. Tape serves as both a visual and metaphoric element in which the strength and fragility of people are acknowledged and celebrated. Poured acrylic is difficult to control in any absolute sense, but more control is possible when the artist is fully present and responds to changing conditions in a flexible way. This process itself adds additional subtext to the series in that one can only see and respond to human need when open and available.
